AuthorRabindranath Tagore1861–1941Jogajog (also spelled Yogayog) is a novel by Rabindranath Tagore, published in book form in 1929. It first appeared in serial form in the magazine Bichitra between 1927 and 1928. Its first two installments were titled Tin Purush; Tagore renamed it Jogajog starting with the third.
The story turns on the hidden rivalry between two families: the Chatterjees, declining aristocrats represented by Biprodas, and the Ghosals, represented by Madhusudan, who stand for new money and arrogance. Kumudini, Biprodas's sister, is caught between the two when she is married to Madhusudan. Raised in a sheltered home and devoted to religious tradition, she is suddenly confronted with her husband's crude display of wealth and power, which also takes the form of the marital violence she endures. The novel also addresses marital rape and a sexual liaison between Madhusudan and Shyamasundari, the widow of his elder brother. Biprodas, for his part, champions equal dignity and rights for women.
The novel was translated into English by Supriya Chaudhuri in 2006 as part of the Oxford Tagore Translations series, and was adapted into a film of the same name in 2015.
