AuthorDon Juan Manuel1282–1349The Book of the Knight and the Squire is a prose work of medieval Castilian literature, written by Don Juan Manuel in 1327. As it survives, it was originally made up of a prologue and fifty-one chapters, but much of it has been lost, since chapters from the end of the third to the sixteenth are missing.
The work takes the form of a dialogue between an elderly knight and a squire, closely following the model of the Lucidario. Its prologue, a common device for presenting a book's purpose, helps clarify the didactic intention of the whole. It is also closely related to some works by Ramon Llull and Alfonso X, with which it shares concerns and tradition.
