AuthorDean Koontzb. 1945Watchers is a suspense novel by American author Dean Koontz, published in 1987. Together with Strangers, Lightning and Midnight, it helped establish Koontz as a bestselling writer.
The story follows Travis Cornell, a former Delta Force operator who has grown disillusioned and feels his life has lost its purpose. While exploring a canyon near his home, he encounters two genetically engineered creatures that have escaped from a top-secret government laboratory. One, a Golden Retriever with remarkable intelligence, wins his friendship, and Travis names him Einstein. The other, known as the Outsider, appears determined to kill the dog. Travis also rescues Nora Devon, a young woman who has lived sheltered from the world, from a dangerous stalker, and the three form a partnership. They soon find themselves hunted both by the Outsider and by federal agents eager to recapture the escapees. A ruthless freelance assassin, Vince Nasco, joins the pursuit with his own designs on the dog.
The novel blends chase thriller elements with themes of genetic experimentation and government secrecy, but its emotional core lies in the characters' growth as they learn to trust and reconnect with others. Its popularity led to several low-budget films loosely based on the book, including Watchers (1988), Watchers II (1990), Watchers III (1994) and Watchers Reborn (1998).
