Georg Wilhelm Friedrich HegelAuthorGeorg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel1770–1831

Hegel's Lectures on the History of Philosophy are the courses he delivered on several occasions between 1805 and 1831, the year of his death. His student Karl Ludwig Michelet edited the lecture notes in 1833 and revised them between 1840 and 1842. Elizabeth Haldane produced an English translation in 1892.

In these lectures Hegel surveys the major philosophers and argues that consciousness progresses from an undifferentiated pantheism of the East toward a more individualistic understanding, culminating in the freedom of the Germanic era. He engages extensively with the voluminous histories of philosophy written in Germany after 1740, such as those by Brucker, Buhle, Tiedemann and Tennemann.
