AuthorMuhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari839–922The Jāmiʻ al-Bayān ʻan Taʼwīl āy al-Qurʼān, popularly known as Tafsīr al-Ṭabarī, is a Sunni commentary on the Quran by the Persian scholar Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari (838–923). Al-Tabari completed the work in 883, often dictating sections to his students, and it is his second great work after his history of the prophets and kings, the Tarīkh al-Rusul wa'l-Mulūk.
From the outset it was held in high regard, and it has kept its importance for scholars to the present day. It is the earliest major running commentary on the Quran to survive in its original form. Like his history, it is notable for its comprehensiveness and for citing multiple, often conflicting, sources.
A group of scholars from Transoxiana translated the work into Persian on commission from the Samanid king Mansur I (961–976).
