Zachris Topelius (1818-1898) was a Finnish writer, poet, journalist and historian, and later rector of the University of Helsinki. Born when Finland was a Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire, he wrote exclusively in Swedish, the language of the Finnish cultural elite, although his works were soon translated into Finnish. His historical novels helped shape a sense of national identity in the nineteenth century, and he is regarded as one of the pillars of Finnish culture.

He grew up at the Kuddnäs farm near Nykarleby. His father, a country doctor, was an early collector of Finnish folk songs, and his mother loved reciting poetry, both of which nurtured his later vocation. After schooling in Oulu, where a family library fed his love of reading, he moved to Helsinki and became part of the circle of the nationalist poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg. He took his doctorate in history in 1847 and worked as a newspaper editor, university librarian and teacher before becoming professor in 1854.

His output includes poetry, historical fiction, short stories, drama and children's literature. The Surgeon's Stories follow episodes of Swedish and Finnish history in the manner of Walter Scott, while his verse and his books for young readers expressed a romantic Finnish patriotism. He also wrote libretti for an opera on Finnish themes and devoted much writing to Christmas and New Year, which became traditions closely associated with his name.

His legacy lives on in Finnish children's literature and in the way the nation remembers its past. His birthplace at Kuddnäs is now a museum, and he is still seen as one of the most representative figures of nineteenth-century Finnish culture.
