Jeton Kelmendi
b. 1978 · Kosovar poet and journalist
Jeton Kelmendi (born 1978 in Peja, Kosovo) is an Albanian-language poet, playwright, translator and journalist. He is best known for poetry that has been translated into many languages and included in international anthologies, which makes him one of the most translated Albanian poets of his generation.
He grew up in Peja, where he completed elementary school, and then studied mass communication at the University of Pristina. He later pursued graduate work in international relations and security at the Free University of Brussels, where he has lived and worked for many years. His career has combined journalism for Albanian and foreign outlets with essays on culture, politics and international affairs, fields that run quietly through much of his writing.
His first poetry collection, The Century of Promises (1999), brought him wider recognition, and was followed by many further volumes of verse as well as the play The Madam Word (2007). His poems are noted for their attention to form, careful construction of the text and compact, layered meaning. Romantic lyricism, elliptical verse and metaphor sit side by side in them, and their recurring concerns include love, memory, silence and homeland. Between 1998 and 1999 he served as a member of the Kosovo Liberation Army during the war of liberation, a period that forms part of the historical background to his work.
His poems have appeared in translation in many languages and in countries across Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East, a reach unusual for a poet writing in Albanian. He has received international awards and belongs to several literary and academic associations. His legacy lies in contemporary Albanian poetry, which he has helped bring into wider conversation with European and world literature.
