Javier Cercas (José Javier Cercas Mena, born in Ibahernando, Cáceres, in 1962) is a Spanish novelist and professor of Spanish literature whose work blends fiction, chronicle and personal reflection. His books have been translated into more than thirty languages and have won prizes in Spain and abroad.
He was born in a small village in Extremadura and moved with his family to Girona in 1966, when he was four. Every summer until the age of fifteen he returned to Ibahernando, a bond he has kept throughout his life. He studied Hispanic Philology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and later earned a doctorate at the University of Barcelona. He spent two years at the University of Illinois in Urbana, where he wrote his first novel, El móvil (1987). From 1989 he taught Spanish literature at the University of Girona and wrote articles and reviews for newspapers, including El País.
His breakthrough came with Soldiers of Salamis (2001), a novel that mixes journalistic inquiry with invention and reached readers well beyond Spain. Its success allowed him to devote himself fully to writing. He then published The Speed of Light (2005), Anatomy of a Moment (2009), The Impostor (2014) and The Monarch of the Shadows (2017), books that return again and again to the Spanish Civil War and the transition to democracy. His narrative relies on what he calls the testimonial novel, in which true and invented events blend until their boundaries blur. For him, every novel is in some sense autobiographical and should aim at a kind of catharsis. His stories often unfold in urban settings and recent past, with a warm and sometimes humorous tone.
Cercas names Jorge Luis Borges and Franz Kafka among his greatest influences. His work has drawn both admiration and debate over the line between fiction and reality, and his views on historical memory and anti-Francoism have led him into disputes with historians and intellectuals. In 2024 he was elected to the Royal Spanish Academy, taking the seat R left vacant by Javier Marías, and he remains a leading figure in contemporary fiction in Spanish.
