James C. Collins
b. 1958 · American business consultant and author on management
James C. Collins is an American consultant, researcher and author best known for his writing on business management. Born in 1958 in Boulder, Colorado, he studied mathematics at Stanford University and later earned an MBA. His significance lies in turning the study of long-lasting companies into books that reached a very wide readership.
After graduating he spent eighteen months in McKinsey's San Francisco office, where he was close to a research project that would later become a landmark book on corporate excellence. He then worked as a product manager at Hewlett-Packard. In 1988 he joined the faculty of Stanford's business school, receiving a teaching award in 1992. That year he published his first book, co-written with William C. Lazier, and in 1994 came Built to Last, written with Jerry I. Porras, which made his reputation.
His method pairs data analysis with comparisons between companies, and his books are built around questions about why some organisations thrive while others stall or decline. His style is direct, aiming for ideas that managers can apply. In 1995 he founded a management laboratory in Boulder, from which he researches and teaches executives. He has also worked with social sector organisations and served as a senior executive at CNN International.
His legacy lies in popularising the idea that business success is built through discipline and consistency, and in the wide influence of his analyses among managers around the world.
